Oh Pepsi...

When will you learn that no matter how many times you change your logo... you're never going to be as good as Coke. Coca-cola has NEVER had to change there logo. they tried to change there taste once (SMACKS COKE ON NOSE WITH ROLLED NEWSPAPER) but they know now that was dumb... hell, I'm still a little upset they took the cocaine out....

art

This article is relevant to my interests... not only because I had recently visited Brazil and took note of some of the amazing street art, but also because it brings up several interesting aesthetic and social implications. Does street art suddenly lose it's influence and credibility when it is taken into the controlled and heavily political "art world" of main stream galleries? Take an artist like Shepard Fairey whose artwork is extremely political in it's own right, has he not gained more interest and favor because of his ability to show in galleries? Or has this made his message mere drivel on the wall of some lawyer who is suing a grandmother because her 13 year old grandson downloaded two Ramones songs? Just something to think about...

A Day in the Life of...

So since I'm sure many of you wish I was drawing more, posting more, or even maybe you are wondering if I really am alive, I thought I would give you a brief glimpse into what my average day is like...

7:05 a.m. - Alarm goes off (Shipping Up to Boston)

7:13 a.m. - snooze

7:21 a.m. - snooze

7:29 a.m. - Finally crawl out of bed and into the bathroom

7:34 a.m. - finish morning piss

7:45 a.m. - out of the shower, teeth are brushed, now to get dressed

7:50 a.m. - breakfast?

8:00 a.m. - on the road, traveling to work

8:45 - 9:15 a.m. - arrive at work (depends on traffic)

9:30 a.m. - Go over the calendar and events of the day with Em (my assisstant)

9:50 a.m. - Check and respond to emails (personal and work)

10:15 a.m. - Designing

10:20 a.m. - (Department Director) walks in my office complaining (Project they neglected to tell me about for weeks) needs done immediately

11:20 a.m. - finish (Project they neglected to tell me about for weeks), start working on the days jobs again

11:30 a.m. - Meetings

12:30 - checking my favorite webcomics to try and relax my brain

1:00 p.m. - lunch

1:30 p.m. - While I was at lunch (Department Director) noticed (Random working project) needed to be changed

2:10 p.m. - Jeff comes in and says (Project that I thought was done) has changed and needs to be updated

3:00 p.m. - finally back working on whatever I was trying to start in the morning

3:15 p.m. - get frustrated and start looking at design blogs to get inspired

3:40 p.m. - start harassing Em with brain spew, or sending out random anti-informative text messages to friends

3:50 p.m. - designing again

5:10 p.m. - Leave work

6:05 p.m. - get back home

6:10 p.m. - unwind

6:30 p.m. - FOOD.

7:00 p.m. - Scrubs time

8:00 p.m. - back in front of the computer working on freelance stuff

9:00 p.m. distracted by blogs and surfing the interwebs

10:00 p.m. - realize that things need to get done for work tomorrow and begin working on them

1:00 a.m. - Finally get tired of my eyes burning and go to bed

This is a generalization of one of my average days... but yea... i've been so busy lately that i don't remember a point in time when i technically didn't have something to do... i probably wasn't doing it right at the moment, but i had it to do....

and on the sociology front...

Not too much, but a nice little article.

...huh

So my assistant noticed today that when I hit a "creative block" I start with a bizarre hum and launch into the Oscar Mayer Weiner song. This perplexes me, one because I never noticed I did it, although upon reflection, realized I do it all the fawking time... and two, when have I EVER wanted to be an Oscar Mayer wiener? This must be some bizarre form of psychosis...

Proof

Being somebody who slaves day in/day out at there "day job" (which I place into quotation marks because this job has been lasting long long into the night for the past three weeks) doing things like "imagery", "graphics", "designing", "marketing" and other such horrible words that I am sure will get me banned from the vastness of the internets, I notice things. Sometimes I will be walking down the street and see a particular sign on an establishment and say aloud to the annoyance of all those around me, "Why the fawk did they use that font? That looks horrible!". Today I noticed these.... these two magazines were released in the same month, featuring the same people on the covers... this is the power of marketing and propaganda. Congratulations, you are all now sheep....side note, I didn't even know Tiger Beat was still around... I thought that shit went under at the end of the 90's.

It's been awhile...

So I've been gone for a few weeks. Most of you probably could care less, but there are those select few, the proud, the brave... actually one of you is almost a Marine now so this joke has kind of lost it's edge. Anyways... yes, I have returned from abroad. I was sent to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for two weeks at the beginning of the month and it was amazing, as soon as I finish editing the 14,000 images I took while there, I am sure I will share a few of them on here, or on here. Expect daily sketches to start back up soon, and lots more fun-ness will hopefully start taking place now that I have other life problems under control.

Frightening...

This proves things I've been saying for years.

And so...

Life has begun to calm down... amidst all of this I am going to be out of the country for most of July, so I will ramp up the drawings again when I return... in other news... this has got to be one of the best commencement addresses I've heard in a long time, given to Harvard's graduating class by J.K. Rowling.... here's a passage I particularly enjoyed...

"However, the fact that you are graduating from Harvard suggests that you are not very well-acquainted with failure. You might be driven by a fear of failure quite as much as a desire for success. Indeed, your conception of failure might not be too far from the average person’s idea of success, so high have you already flown academically.

Ultimately, we all have to decide for ourselves what constitutes failure, but the world is quite eager to give you a set of criteria if you let it. So I think it fair to say that by any conventional measure, a mere seven years after my graduation day, I had failed on an epic scale. An exceptionally short-lived marriage had imploded, and I was jobless, a lone parent, and as poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless. The fears my parents had had for me, and that I had had for myself, had both come to pass, and by every usual standard, I was the biggest failure I knew.

Now, I am not going to stand here and tell you that failure is fun. That period of my life was a dark one, and I had no idea that there was going to be what the press has since represented as a kind of fairy tale resolution. I had no idea how far the tunnel extended, and for a long time, any light at the end of it was a hope rather than a reality.

So why do I talk about the benefits of failure? Simply because failure meant a stripping away of the inessential. I stopped pretending to myself that I was anything other than what I was, and began to direct all my energy into finishing the only work that mattered to me. Had I really succeeded at anything else, I might never have found the determination to succeed in the one arena I believed I truly belonged. I was set free, because my greatest fear had already been realised, and I was still alive, and I still had a daughter whom I adored, and I had an old typewriter and a big idea. And so rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life."

EVERYBODY'S GOING TO DIE!

sorry about the delay in the daily drawings... guess I should re-title the posts "When I Got the Chance to Draw... Drawing" but that just seems awkward... I will catch up, life just kind of got in the way... as it always does, but ph34r not tr00 believer, for I will return!

...in other news, I believe this deserves some attention, because I am totally going to get one and turn it into a floating pirate city-state, where piracy will be the law! (ph34r my ability to make a contradiction work!)... which is much better than what those guys are probably going to do with them, my guess it will all end up like this.

Genius/Retarded?

I'm not completely sure HOW I feel about this article. On one hand, it's rather inventive... although not really all that original or well thought out... I mean, he has an email, he's online, I guarantee he could find pr0n of at least ONE girl who looked close to the girl he was trying to scam.

Support the War Effort!

The teenagers of Mexico have declared war on the Emo Kids. Apparently every sub-genre of kid who is not emo in Mexico has banded together to go on Emo-Bashing raid-like hunting parties. This has the making of an amazing sociological moment where once again the wheels of change force a sub-genre to either "step up" or die... maybe this is something we can blame on video games, like WoW is somehow inspiring these teenagers to band together in "parties" on organized "quests" with very specific goals... wow, that sounds like me trying to go to Sheetz. Anyways, instead of hunting them down for loot, I always preferred this...

Just to keep you in "the know"...

I am soon going to have to get a passport, like VERY soon, like, I should be doing the paperwork now... but then I read this and it makes me very much NOT want to get one.

Do you know what hugs are?

THEY'RE A GATEWAY TO THE SEX!

I wish I was joking.... read this.

I will not play at tug o'war.
I'd rather play at hug o'war,
Where everyone hugs
Instead of tugs,
Where everyone giggles
And rolls on the rug,
Where everyone kisses,
And everyone grins,
And everyone cuddles,
And everyone wins.

Institutionalized

Our Grand Master of all things Video has put the first short-film from Insano online. Check it out here!

Mutants? Aren't we all?

Just read a very informative article this morning. It may only be my personal interpretation, but I really see this as a major step forward in an area and field that has needed it desperately. Having two family members who have autism, I am constantly annoyed with people who think of them as "slow" or "retarded" just because they function on a very different level than the rest of us. I've heard many explanations that autism is caused by the pesticides in our food, or the fact that most of our babysitter's were the TV, or even mercury in the immunizations we are given as children, but not enough people have been treating autism less like a disease, and more like a new way for our minds to work. Any neuro-scientist will tell you we barely understand the way the human mind works, what if the way it works in those with autistic minds is just so different from us with "typical" wiring that we can't truly understand it yet. What if the way there minds are being wired is nature's next attempt at a form of our evolution? If you know me, you know I love comic books and movies and all things geek-dom, but it excites me more to look at someone in my family and consider that they might be a real mutant, just as super powered as the ones in the comics.

The Nerd Handbook for Non-Nerds

...This is not an article for you, who are most likely, like me, a nerd... no, this handbook is for your family, friends and/or significant other who stare at you from the corner of your "cave" and wonder what the hell is wrong with you, and in the case of your family, what the hell they obviously did wrong or in the case of a possible significant other (not the Apple II you pretend is your secret lover) how the hell they are going to stay with you.... an absolutely beautiful and shameless article written by someone who truly understands...

a choice quote... "Your nerd spent a lot of his younger life being an outcast because of his strange affinity with the computer. This created a basic bitterness in his psyche that is the foundation for his humor."

Ten Simple Rules

These are ten rules from the Immaculate Heart College Art Department... I think these are rules that anyone, anywhere, can and should follow...

  1. Find a place you trust and then try trusting it for a while.
  2. General duties of a student: pull everything out of your teacher, pull everything out of your fellow students.
  3. General duties of a teacher: pull everything out of your students.
  4. Consider everything an experiment.
  5. Be self-disciplined. This means finding someone wise or smart and choosing to follow them. To be disciplined is to follow in a good way. To be self-disciplined is to follow in a better way.
  6. Nothing is a mistake. There is no win and no fail. There is only make.
  7. The only rule is work. If you work it will lead to something. It’s the people who do all of the work all the time who eventually catch on to things.
  8. Don’t try to create and analyse at the same time. They’re different processes.
  9. Be happy whenever you can manage it. Enjoy yourself. It’s lighter than you think.
  10. “We’re breaking all of the rules. Even our own rules. And how do we do that? By leaving plenty of room for X quantities.” - John Cage.

Helpful hints: Always be around. Come or go to everything always. Go to classes. Read anything you can get your hands on. Look at movies carefully often. Save everything, it might come in handy later.

MEDIA BLITZ ATTACK!!!

First... I have to share with everyone that I just spent the last hour and a half playing halo 3 with 9 of my co-workers... it was a "male-bonding-lunch-special". Or at least that's what the HR director told everyone, as he topped out as high scorer for the second time in a row in our second Team Slayer match...

...secondly, I really dug this article by Amanda Marcotte, in the recent weeks, where it seems like every woman out there has been going after any guy who would dare pick up a video game, it's nice to read an article written by a woman and with a great depth and clarity about the subject.

The Internet is Serious Business

There is a GREAT article over on Wired that I think everyone should read.... and it has the greatest headline I think I've ever seen....

In other news... All of us here at Bad Luck (and affiliates) are working very hard on bringing much enjoyment to all of you out there. Crazy Uncle Jim from Jersey came to visit this past weekend, and although he didn't sleep much, we came up with quite a few great boner-inducing-vomitorium-stylized-blood-and-viscera ideas. More on these things later. Also, our resident Grand Vizier of All Things Movie, Adam Steppenwolf, has completed a few projects and is close to completing a few more.... which you can check out here... and hopefully will be screened at the Bad Luck Studios open house! More information on that and the studio at a later date....

moving slowly forward-ish....

We are not dead....

we were not enslaved by a tyranical hive-mind AI and forced to work in slave labor camps....

we were not arrested and detained by Homeland Security.... at least not yet......

but things are taking awhile cause I wanna get them right the first time, so please bear with me and we'll have fun things for you soon enough....

meanwhile....my new favorite quote.....

"Do I like nerds? I am a nerd. I have shelves full of books at home about vampires and werewolves. And I always have my PSP with me. Right now I'm playing Jeanne D'Arc, which is just awesome. Also, I've got a PS3 and I'm dying for the new Final Fantasy to come out. See? I told you I was a total nerd." - Jenna Haze
